First Class Fitter

is a highly skilled tradesperson responsible for precisely measuring, cutting, and assembling metal components to create complex structures or machinery, typically within a manufacturing or shipbuilding environment, requiring a high level of accuracy, experience, and the ability to read blueprints and interpret complex specifications, often leading a team of less experienced fitters while ensuring quality standards are met throughout the fabrication process; key duties include intricate layout work, cutting materials with specialized tools, aligning and fitting components, and performing quality checks to ensure proper fit and function.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Precise Measurement and Layout: Accurately measure and mark out metal components on large sheets or sections using precision tools to ensure proper fit and alignment.

  • Cutting and Shaping: Utilize various cutting tools like torches, power saws, shears, and grinders to precisely cut metal pieces according to blueprints.

  • Component Assembly: Fit and assemble complex metal components together, ensuring proper alignment and tolerances using jigs, clamps, and other tooling.

  • Welding and Fabrication: May perform welding tasks to join components, depending on the specific role and company requirements.

  • Quality Control: Conduct thorough quality checks on fabricated assemblies to ensure they meet specifications and standards.

  • Blueprint Interpretation: Accurately read and interpret complex blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications to guide fabrication process.

  • Team Leadership: May lead and mentor less experienced fitters, assigning tasks and ensuring proper execution of work.

  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations in the workplace.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Extensive Fitting Experience: Several years of experience as a fitter, demonstrating proficiency in complex metal fabrication techniques.

  • Technical Skills: Thorough understanding of measuring tools, cutting methods, welding techniques, and proper use of shop machinery.

  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to accurately interpret and work from detailed blueprints and technical drawings.

  • Strong Math Skills: Precise mathematical calculations for measuring and layout work.

  • Physical Strength and Stamina: Ability to lift and maneuver heavy metal components.

  • Attention to Detail: High level of precision and meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy in fitting work.
