First Class Machinist

is a highly skilled professional who sets up and operates a variety of precision machine tools to produce complex metal parts with extremely tight tolerances, often requiring advanced knowledge of blueprints, complex machining techniques, and the ability to troubleshoot and maintain sophisticated manual and CNC equipment; they typically have extensive experience in the field, can train other machinists, and are responsible for ensuring the highest quality standards in production. 

Key responsibilities of a First Class Machinist:

  • Interpreting technical drawings and specifications: Accurately reading and understanding detailed blueprints, design layouts, and engineering specifications to determine the required machining processes and tolerances. 

  • Setting up and operating CNC and/or manual machines: Programming and operating complex manual and/or CNC machines like lathes, milling machines, grinders, and boring mills to precisely shape metal parts. 

  • Advanced machining techniques: Performing specialized machining operations such as threading, boring, grinding, and finishing to achieve precise dimensions. 

  • Quality control: Utilizing precision measuring tools to inspect finished parts for accuracy, ensuring they meet strict quality standards. 

  • Troubleshooting and maintenance: Identifying and resolving machine malfunctions, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring proper tool selection and setup. 

  • Material selection: Choosing appropriate metal stock based on the required properties and application of the final product. 

  • Training and mentoring: Guiding and instructing less experienced machinists on proper techniques and safety procedures. 

  • Complex project management: Managing multiple machining projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion while maintaining high quality standards. 

Skills and qualifications of a First Class Machinist:

  • Extensive machining experience: Proven expertise in operating a wide range of conventional and CNC machine tools 

  • Strong mechanical aptitude: Deep understanding of machine mechanics, cutting tools, and machining processes 

  • Precision measurement skills: Proficiency with precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and height gauges 

  • Computer literacy: Familiarity with CNC programming languages and CAD software 

  • Attention to detail: Ability to consistently produce precise parts with tight tolerances 

  • Problem-solving skills: Identifying and resolving machining issues effectively
